Shelving By a Cambridge Handyman![]() Shelving is one of the most common and necessary feature in many homes. Organizing vertical space increases the use of any room, especially kitchens and bedrooms. Creating the shelf itself is pretty easy – walk into any home improvement store and you can have planks of pre-sanded wood cut to your specification. These are even easy to paint if needed. You have the wood, you’ve cut the shelves, but now what? The right size brackets and screws are essential to this task. Brackets that are too large will definitely hold up the shelf, but are awkward to work with in everyday living and take up too much unnecessary space. Use brackets that are too small, though, and your whole project will come tumbling down. Measure first and grab the right size, and don’t forget to check screw sizes before leaving the store, or this will result in another trip to get materials.

Besides brackets and screws, another consideration is whether drywall itself is sufficient to support the weight of this burden or if it will be essential to locate a wall stud and incorporate it into this process. It is important to think about the utility of the shelf in mind, what is going to be placed on it and how large is the shelf intended to be. Either way however, a sturdy shelf needs to be attached to something sturdy, like the wall stud behind the drywall. A stud finding tool is important to this task. A reliable handheld tool will have a light that blinks and emits a sound when the screws in a stud are detected. Depending on the size of the shelf, placement, and heaviness of contents, a simple screw into a stud may not be enough support. Sometimes anchoring is required to secure the screw in place, and this requires a larger drill bit to create a hole in the drywall large enough for an anchor.
Once all that planning is taken into account, leveling is the next step so that items do not roll of the shelf. This can be Gerry-rigged using any straight edge placed on the shelf during attachment or a marble or small ball, but more effective and less likely to fall are proper levels. These tools can easily show when a shelf isn’t straight as a bubble in liquid contained in the level itself moves out of a target window. Erecting one shelf can easily take more time than was thought, monopolizing an afternoon, and perhaps there are more than one! We bet some extra help would be welcomed right about now.
All of this we’ve talked about so far is about making your own shelves from raw materials to enhance a room.
